Tameshigiri (試し斬り) literally cutting test. In ancient times, way to check the quality of the newly forged blade. Was usually performed by advanced fencers on the condemned or the body. The result of this test was often recorded on nakago katana (part of the blade, which is in the tsuka, and which was also usually a signature armorer).

Nowadays tameshigiri serve to check the skills of students of Japanese fencing gained in training into practice. Fencing Training - include both forms of iaido kata performed independently (with Shinken, or a sharp sword or iaito) and in pairs (with bokken or shinai).

Nowadays, body convicts were replaced with rice straw mats (tatami omote) folds in a roll and placed on a stand. Advanced students perform fencing cutting mats with bamboo rice stem, in order to increase the difficulty of the training.

Correctly, (or effectively) made cut the sword cut through the object, without the slightest problem and great effort from the swordsman. Maintaining the correct cutting principles that emphasize from the beginning of each practitioner training in our dojo, makes tameshigiri Tameshigiri should not cause any trouble to people regardless of seniority. In the event of a derogation from the rules properly cut, the test fails - a sword stuck in the mat or worse break.

Tameshegiri is aimed at cutting the mapping swordsman during a dangerous situation, because an important element is the attitude both before and after cutting. Inserting enough strength to cut, we can "chop" the object, but the broad position needed to derive such an attack, would render the defense against further attacks. School of the sword, which we practice in our dojo - Muso Shinden Ryu, includes dozens of forms, most of which assume more defense against attackers.
